Szombathely (Hungarian: [ˈsombɒthɛj]; German: Steinamanger, Slovak: Kamenec) is a city in Hungary. It has about 78,000 inhabitants, making it the 10th most populous city of Hungary. It is the administrative centre of Vas County in the west of the country, located near the border with Austria. Szombathely lies by the streams Perint and Gyöngyös, where the Alpokalja (Lower Alps) mountains meet the Little Hungarian Plain.

With the establishment of a diocese in 1777 the construction of a cathedral became necessary.
