The 3.23-square-kilometre (800-acre) village has a population (2025) of 2,876 and a population density of 890 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,300/sq mi). Avaldsnes has been described as "Norway's oldest capital" because it was the primary residency of Harald Fairhair who unified Norway into one kingdom.
