Archeological excavations have shown Stobi was built where the Erigon (Crna River) joins the Axios (Vardar), making it strategically important as a center for both trade and warfare. In early times, the chief town and seat of the Paeonian kings was Bylazora but later, the seat of the kings was moved to Stobi.
