Kazan

The Kazan Kremlin (Russian: Казанский кремль; Tatar: Казан кирмәне) is the chief historic citadel of Kazan, a city in Russia. It was built at the behest of Ivan the Terrible on the ruins of the former castle of Kazan khans.

The Kul Sharif Mosque (Tatar: Кол Шәриф мәчете, romanized: Qol Şärif mäçete; Russian: Мечеть Кул-Шариф, romanized: Mechet' Kul-Sharif) located in Kazan Kremlin, was reputed to be – at the time of its construction – one of the largest mosques in Russia, and in Europe outside of Istanbul.
